Days 11 and 12: D.C. democracy, night life, friends and family

Socialists unite!!
After a late night of catching up with my old university roommate Tim, we were treated to perfect fall D.C. weather on Saturday.  Tim, his son William and I were heading out for a little tour of our nation's capitol.  We picked up some bagels and luckily found a parking spot just a few blocks from the White House.

We were heading toward the Lincoln Memorial where a protest was happening in the name of labor, peace, and socialism.  Aunt Marylin and Uncle Bill were there supporting the troops by demanding their safe return under the banner of MFSO.  It was great walking these grounds which I can't remember doing since I was 10 years old on Grandma Marge's D.C. trip.  To see the democracy in action was also a treat although I was hoping for a more energetic and numerous crowd.  After chasing Marylin and Bill around the reflection pool, and hearing numerous speakers, including Al Sharpton and some other anchor from MSNBC, I finally caught up with them.  It's been cool running into them on this trip and this marked the third time.
I bought a socialist newspaper that I've yet to read and plan on leaving it in some small town shop to scare the locals that the communists are coming.  By the time I met up with Marylin and Bill, William was feeling pretty beat so we stopped a supermarket and went home to cook up some burgers and squash.

Bring'em home...really!
That night Tim and I went out to a part of town known as Adam's Morgan.  The first place we went to was the most famous place on the street and it was called Madam Organ's.  They had a funky blues band playing and we danced and chatted with a few other people in the bar.  After they finished we went outside and the scene of the street had really changed.  The first thing I noticed was the diversity of the party people.  The bars looked sleezy and reminded me of cheap college bars where douches (def. a person who behaves like they have more power than they really do; see Tim Mynett) and insecure females gather to talk about pop culture, dance, and ultimately try to find a mate.  Nevertheless, it was a fun experience and a rewarding jumbo slice finished our night.

Beth, Tim, Hannah and William
The next day was a bit more dreary and after Tim and I picked up some southern breakfast (grits) we relaxed a home for a bit.  I made some of Uncle Robert's popcorn with William and his neighbor friend and we read a story.  In the afternoon we went for a bike ride with Tim, Beth, and William.  I was surprised to see all the nice bikeways in D.C. and you could even go places nearby that would make you forget you were in a city.  After the ride, Beth had to go pick up her daughter with William so she droped Tim and I off at his local Irish pub, 4Ps, to watch some football.  The whole trip was great and I'd like to thank Tim and Beth for their hospitality.
